        # Lead-Free by 2025: Your Roadmap to Calcium-Zinc Stabilizers

**Topic:** Additives

The government notification is on your desk: lead-based stabilizers will be prohibited. Your entire stabilizer system - the one that's worked flawlessly for 15 years - needs to be replaced. And you have no idea where to start.

---
## Problem

Lead stabilizers have been the workhorse of Indian PVC manufacturing for decades due to their low cost and excellent long-term stability. Transitioning to Calcium-Zinc (Ca-Zn) systems is not a simple 1:1 substitution. Ca-Zn stabilizers have different processing characteristics: narrower processing windows, different lubricant interactions, tendency for initial pinking in white products, and higher cost per kg. Factories that attempt a direct swap often face months of quality issues and production losses.

---
## Likely cause

This issue often stems from inconsistent compounding temperatures, inferior raw material purity, or unbalanced stabilizer ratios within the formulation matrix.

## Corrective direction

NBT has developed a **structured 3-phase transition protocol**: **Phase 1 (Lab Trial)** - our lab formulates a Ca-Zn system matched to your specific resin, plasticizer, and processing temperature. We test for initial color, long-term stability, and mechanical properties. **Phase 2 (Pilot Run)** - we supply enough material for a supervised production trial on your actual line, adjusting lubricant ratios and temperatures in real-time. **Phase 3 (Full Scale)** - once the formulation is locked, we provide consistent Ca-Zn One-Pack supply from our Bawana facility. To date, we've successfully transitioned 40+ factories from lead to Ca-Zn with zero production downtime.

          ## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is Ca-Zn stabilizer more expensive than lead?

The per-kg cost is 15-25% higher, but lead-free products increasingly command premium pricing that more than offsets the material cost.

### Will my pipe pass the same pressure and aging tests?

Yes, if the formulation is properly optimized. It may require slightly different resin and co-stabilizer selection.
