        # The Hidden Risks of Recycled PVC: What Your Supplier Won't Tell You

**Topic:** Technical

The price of recycled PVC regrind is tempting - sometimes 40% cheaper than virgin. But after three months of customer complaints and product returns, you realize the real cost is much higher.

---
## Problem

Recycled PVC is inherently unpredictable. Each batch of regrind contains an unknown cocktail of previous additives, stabilizers, pigments, fillers, and degradation by-products. The molecular weight distribution is inconsistent (varying K-values in the same batch), which causes erratic melt behavior. Common issues include: color inconsistency, odor problems, reduced impact strength, lower heat stability, and unpredictable electrical properties. For cable insulation or pressure pipes, using recycled resin can be downright dangerous.

---
## Likely cause

This issue often stems from inconsistent compounding temperatures, inferior raw material purity, or unbalanced stabilizer ratios within the formulation matrix.

---

---
## Corrective direction

NBT advocates a **calculated blending approach** rather than all-or-nothing. For non-critical applications (drainage pipes, garden furniture, cable duct), blending up to 30-40% high-quality regrind with **NBT Virgin SG-5 Resin** can deliver acceptable performance at reduced cost. The key is to always use virgin resin as the base and to increase your stabilizer loading by 20-30% to compensate for the degradation history of the recycled material. For critical applications (pressure pipes, cables, medical, food contact), NBT recommends 100% virgin resin - no exceptions.

          ## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I test the quality of recycled PVC before buying?

At minimum, test for K-value (viscosity), ash content (filler loading), and volatile matter. NBT can run these tests in our lab for you.

### Can optical brighteners fix the color of recycled PVC?

Partially. OB-1 can mask yellowish tints, but dark contamination or heavy pigment loads cannot be corrected optically.
